Loud.... Why was it so loud? Wasn't it bed time?
She opened her eyes to the sounds of her mother, the voice just a whisper, but that didn't matter. She always woke up when Mom called. "Verondi.. come on... get up love." She spoke, and her eyes opened, looking up at her mother, a young high elf with firey red hair, and bright green eyes.
Her mother carefully lifted her from the crib she slept in, and began dressing her in the simplest outfit she could find, a short sundress. "Momma, where are we going?" She asked, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes. "We're.. taking a trip dear." she said, her eyes seeming distant, even to the not so keen observations of a three year old.
Her mother set her on the ground, and the moment Verondi was free, she walked over to her toys, and picked up her hawkstrider plushie, hugging it close. "if we gotta go, can Sun come too?" She asked, holding up the toy with a curious eye." Her mother smiled, in spite of her current state. "Yes.. dear... Sun can come."
The gruff voice of her father could be heard outside her room, calling in to her mother. "Lorana... come on." Her mother smiled nervously, and picked her up, walking out to meet her father, who, as usual, was dressed like he was going to war, and had his sword on his back. He looked them over, niether smiling, nor frowning, just that hard stare common to his demeanor. "We have to hurry.. They're already in the Bazaar."
With that the three left, beginning their journey in the residental areas, and moving along as quickly, yet nonchelantly as they could. Her father had donned a cloak, which made him look rather mysterious, as had her mother, for that matter.
After a while she could hear something odd, and every time she did, her parents seemed to pick up the pace slightly. "Momma, what's all that noise?" She asked, but her mother only shook her head. It got louder and louder, seemingly growing with each turn they took. The flickering light of fire, torches, and the clank of metal could soon be heard, as well as shouting in both common, and the language of the high elves. "FILTHY HUMANS! YOU BETRAYED US!" "SO MUCH FOR THIS ALLIANCE!" And the sounds from the other side, "WE DID NOTHING! WE HAVE LIVED HERE FOR THIS LONG! YOU KNOW US AS FRIENDS!" Some were cut off with sickening yells, and Verondi burried her face into her mother's shoulder, trying to block out the sounds.
When they got to Murder Row, they both stopped, and looked to each other. Her father shook his head, sighing. "You know we can't make it out like this..." Her mother's eyes widened, realizing the words he was saying. "but.. we can't just...." He cut her off, giving her a stern look. "We'll have to... You know what will happen if they.... At least if we... " Lorana shook her head, tears forming in her eyes, as she shook her head. "no... no.. I won't let it happen! she'll have such a hard life!" He frowned, beginning to grow impatient with his wife. "She'll have a hard life no matter where we take her just because of what she is! Look... right now.. her ears are about normal length... She can pass for a high elf well enough... When it's died down, we can come back for her."
Lorana was shaking, as she fought to hold back tears... her husband and she were about to be killed, just because of the alliance's betrayal of the high elves. It wasn't fair DAMMIT! And yet here she was, handing over Verondi, her only daughter, to him. He held her in his plate and mail covered arms, and looked her over, kissing her on top of the head. "Look... Mommy and Daddy have to go somewhere... I need you to be a big girl and hide... don't let anyone find you..." Verondi looked up at his face, a hand grabbing a hold of his hair, and his beard. "Will you... come back daddy?" His eyes never changed, holding the same expression, as he stared down at her, the same precision that made him a great commander, but a horrible father. "yes. We'll be back." He walked behind the tree near the inn in Murder row and set her down, looking at her. "now.. like I said, stay here and be quiet. Mom and I will be back."
And that was it.... the two of them were gone. She stayed there for a long time, and eventually, she got cold, and hungry... and thirsty.... but she didn't want to move, even though the inn was right there. 'They said they'd be back... mom and dad wouldn't lie...' And it was that very thought, that kept her there for a day and a half. She would have stayed longer, had her crying not alerted one of the Silvermoon Royal Guards that was patrolling by.
He eyed her, not really sure what to make of her at first. Finally, he sighed, and offered her his waterskin, which she drank down greedily, before handing it back to him completely empty. "Right then... so.. what is a little girl like you doing out here by yourself? Murder Row's a dangerous place you know..." She nodded, continuing to sob, and luckily, through her crying he was able to get the gist of it. "mommy and daddy left and I don't know where they are and there were people and loud noises last night and and..." Oh boy.... "Right.. well... Last night was very chaotic.. so.. Let me take you somewhere safe for now, and we'll get some food into you, and a bath, and some nice clothes."
"NO!" she said, her sobs stopping. "Mommy and Daddy said to wait RIGHT here... I don't want them to not find me!" He sighed, piecing everything together, before rubbing his temples. "look... Mommy and Daddy will know where to go. I'll stay here myself to tell them where you are okay?" She stared at him, as if she were trying to gauge whether he was telling the truth or not. "really?" He nodded, looking down to her. "really.. now come on then..." And with that, she got up, and took hold of his hand, following him all the way to the orphanage past the bazaar, Matron Mercy's Home for Future Citizens.
